Two Fashion Shows And A Broken Lens

Two years, lum.works is officially two years old! (pats self on back *pat pat*). It's been two years of ups and downs, adventures and lolls, laughter and tears, shooting people and then not...you get the idea.  My journey in fashion photography isn't excluded from this roller coaster ride. It's really more like a three fashion shows story but heck I'm sticking to two, it's my number right now.

The June Show

My friend had recently joined Red Runway and he was walking in his first show so I wanted to give him some support. So, of course, I used my past model status to get into the show...that didn't work as smoothly as I'd thought it would, it was a minute since my last show.

Instead, I got in using a visa-face (i.e. thank God the guy at the door knew me well enough to know I wasn't insane) and well, of course, my camera, since my name still wasn't on the list. I got there after most of the photographers so there wasn't any space for a shorty like me to stand, but there was a nice shiny spot on the ground with my name on it. So that's where I sat, white dress and all, and shot 2000+ photos.

It took me forever and a day to finish editing, when I did finally post the 'Red Runway Fashion Show June 2018' one designer, in particular, took notice and invited me to shoot at her production. I'll admit I was reluctant, what reason did I have for going? Do I really want to sit on the floor again and take a month to edit photos I wasn't being paid to take?

The 1st October Show

The show date got closer and no one had booked me yet, so I thought maybe I should do it after all. It can't hurt to get better at taking fast paced glam shots. The show was amazing, to say the least; I got a spot standing front and center thanks to my sweet photographer friend Michelle; met a great group of fashion photographers again thanks to Michelle; had free Haagen Dazs ice cream and got advice from the founder of Red Runway.

This time it only took me a week to complete edits from again 2000+ photos and not too long after posting the RJ Mango's 'Mango Chow Fashion Gala 2018' album, I got a media invite to another Red Runway Show that very month. Some photos are shown below.

The 2nd October Show

So last Saturday, I journeyed to Anchorage Beach Club and found myself sitting on the ground, in a different white dress, shooting models strutting toward me. It was a flurry of design and colour that instilled some pride in the creative ability of Trinbagonians. It was an exciting end to the anniversary month of my company. Some photos are shown below but you can see the full album here.

The Broken Lens

The evening was going well but then I did something stupid, I picked up my camera bag with one hand. Because of its design it's easy to think it's closed when it wasn't, so I always used two hands. This was one of those "wasn't" times and everything came tumbling out. Though the only casualty was my 50mm lens, it took a lot to fight back my big man tears. And I'm not gonna lie I went home pretty down but I know this is a roller coaster ride so another up is coming soon. Hope you stick around to hear about it.
